(JOHN F. KENNEDY ASSASSINATION): A fine and important Kennedy Assassination relic, an original United Press International teletype detailing the press coverage of the Dallas shooting. The teletype measues 8 1/2" x approximately 27 feet, and runs from the first news of the shooting through Soviet and other countries' reactions to the news of the President's death. The reports, coming from UPI reporter Merriman Smith via radio telephone, five cars behind Kennedy, were the first to refer to "The Grassy Knoll". Indeed this was the genesis of the term in reference to the Kennedy Assassination. The teletype begins with what appear to be garbled code which contains the words "BULLETIN PRECEDE (KENNEDY) (DALLAS)----" then more code then again "BULLETIN PRECEDE (KENNEDY)". The reporter in Dallas, apparently trying to get someone else from posting other news on the system then writes "G E T OFF HX GET OFF GET OFF MORE X1238PCS11/5 (DALLAS)----9 UPR 74 B U L L E L T I N (DALLAS) 1 -- AN UNKNOWN SNIPER FIRED THREE SHOTS AT POOUN [space] FLASH KENNEY FLASH KENNEDY SERIOUSLY WOUNDED----". The reporter then again warns others off the system: "STAY OFF ALL OF YOU SAY OFF AND KEEP OFF GET OFF". Still there is interference "M SPEAKING A THE TT [next line] WILL U U P L E A S E STAY OFF THIS WIRE TILL WE GIVBBB HX STAY OFF STAY OFF". Finally the interference is ended: "UPR 74 B U L L E T I N (DALLAS)---A SNIPER SERIOUSLY WOUNDED LDJVBUNET KENNEDY IN DOWNTOWN DALLAS TODAY...PERHAPS FATALLY". The same bulletin is repeated and then more news comes over: "(DALLAS)---PRESIDENT KENNEDY AND GOVERNOR JOHN CONNALLY OF TEXAS HAVE BEEN CUT DOWN BY ASSASSINS BULLETS IN DOWNTOWN DALLAS. THEY WERE RIDING IN AN OPEN AUTOMOBILE WHEN THE SHOTS WERE FIRED. THE PRESENT, HIS LIMP BODY CRADLED IN THE ARMS OF HIS WIFE JACQUELINE, HAS BEEN RUSHED TO PARKLAND HOSPITAL...STAY OFF...THE GOVERNOR WAS TAKEN TO THE SAME HOSPITAL....NEWSMEN SOME FIVE CAR LENGTHS BEHIND THE PRESIDENT HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE THREE BURSTS OF GUNFIRE. SECRET SERVICE AGENTS IN THE CAR FOLLOWING THE PRESIDNT'S QUICKLY PULLED AUTOMATIC RIFLES. THE BUBBLE OF THE PRESIDENT'S CAR WAS DOWN WHEN THE SHOTS RANG OUT. THE PRESIDENT SLUMPED OVER IN THE BACK SEAT, FACE DOWN. CONNALLY LAY ON THE FLOOR OF THE REAR SEAT. WOUNDS IN THE GOVERNOR'S CHEST WERE CLEARLY VISIBLE. THE WOUNDS INDICATED AN AUTOMATIC WEAPON WAS USED....IN THE TURMOIL, IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO DETERMINE WHETHER SECRET SERVICE AGENTS AND DALLAS POLICE RETURNED THE FIRE. IT COULD NOT BE IMMEDIATELY DETERMINED EITHER WHETHER MRS. KENNEDY OR MRS. CONNALLY WERE WOUNDED. BOTH WOMEN WERE IN THE CAR, AND WERE DRUSHED DOWN OVER THE INERT FORMS OF THEIR HUSBANDS AS THE BIG AUTO RACED TOWARD THE HOSPITAL MRS. KENNEDY COULD BE SEEN ON THE FLOOR OF THE REAR SEAT WITH HER HEAD TOWARD THE PRESIDENT...". The next bulletin details the first indications that Kennedy was probably already dead: "...CLINT HILL, A SECRET SERVICE AGENT ASSIGNED TO MRS KENNEDY SAID 'HE'S DEAD' AS THE PRESDIENT WAS LIFTED FROM THE REAR OF THE WHITE HOUSE TOURING CAR. MR. KENNEDY WAS RUSHED TO AN EMERGENCY ROOM IN THE HOSPITAL. OTHER WHITE HOUSE OFFICIALS WERE IN DOUBT AS THE CORRIDORS OF THE HOSPITAL ERUPTED IN PANDEMONIUM...AT 12:50 PM CENTRAL TIME, ACTING WHITE HOUSE NEWS SECRETARY MALCOM KILFUDD WAS ASKED WHETHER THE PRESIDENT WAS DEAD. HE SAID 'I HAVE NO WORD NOW.'...". The next few lines will be of interest to conspiracy buffs: "...SOME OF THE SECRET SERVICE AGENTS THOUGHT THE GUNFIRE WAS FROM AN AUTOMATIC WEAPON FIRED TO THE RIGHT REAR OF THE PRESIDENT'S CAR...PROBABLY FROM A GRASSY KNOLL TO WHICH POLICE RUSHED...". Speculation as to Kennedy's condition continued unabated: "...CONGRESSMAN JIM WRIGHT OF FORT WORHT SAID BOTH KENNEDY AND CONNALLY WERE SERIOUSLY WOUNDED BUT WERE ALIVE. A CALL HAS BEEN SENT OUT FROM SOME OF THE TOP SURGICAL SPECIALISTS IN DALLAS. A CALL ALSO WENT OUT FOR A PRIEST...". The teletype is again interrupted by lesser news announcing the sale of the Detroit Lions, but the real news of the day quickly resumes noting that Joseph and Rose Kennedy had been informed of the shooting in Hyannis Port. The bulletins continue adding details as they became known. by 1:15 CST, the New York Stock Exchange suspended trading. Then at 1:26 CST: "(DALLAS)---A FATHER HUBER, OF HOLY TRINITY CHURCH IN DALLAS ADMINISTERED THE LAST SACRAMENT OF THE CHURCH TO THE PRESIDENT. THE SACREAMENT WAS ADMINISTERED SHORTLY BEFORE 2 P.M. EST. ANOTHER PRIEST, WHO DECLINED TO GIVE HIS NAME, SAID THE CHIEF EXCUTIVE WAS STILL ALIVE AT THE TIME....". The next sentence reads: "SHERIFF'S OFFICERS TOOK A YOUNG MAN INTO CUSTODY AT THE SCENE AND QUESTIONED HIM BEHIND CLOSED DOORS". Then the focus begins to change to succession. At 1:28 it was reported "...THE VICE PRESIDENT WAS SOMEWHERE IN THE HOSPITAL, BUT IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO DETERMINE HIS PRECISE WHEREABOUTS AT ONCE. HE WAS REPORTED BADLY SHOCKED BY THE SHOOTING. DOTORS WERE TRYING TO KEEP HIM AS QUIET AS POSSIBLE. HE WAS UNDER SECRET SERVIC AND POLICE PROTECTION...". The next report quotes Assistant Press Secretary Malcolm Kilduff: "...'CANNOT SAY' WHETHER THE PRESIDENT IS ALIVE 'CANNOT SAY WHERE HE WAS HIT' HE SAID 'THERE ARE TOO MANY STORIES.'...". Then four minutes later: "FLASH PRESIDENT DEAD", quickly followed a minute later with a bulletin "(DALLAS)---PRESIDENT KENNEDY IS DEAD". The recaps of the events of the day begin, noting that: "...POLICE FOUND A FOREIGN-MADE RIFLE. SHERRIFF'S OFFICERS ARE QUESTIONING A YOUNG MAN PICKED UP A THE SCENE". At 1:54 pm the first foreign reaction is noted: "(MOSCOW)---MOSCOW RADIO'S COMMENTATOR, IN MOURNFUL TONES, HAS ANNOUNCED THE ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY. HE TOLD RUSSIANS----'IT IS SAID HE HAS BEEN MURDERED BY THE EXTREME RIGHT WING ELEMENTS". The teletype continues with reactions to the slaying and begins, and covers in detail, Kennedy's obituary. A spectacular record of these historic events in a form, that due to the internet, is now virtually extinct. Never folded, wit very light margin wear and browning, the bottom and top margins understandably rough, overall otherwise very good condition. $1,500-2,000
