Francis and Severin Roesen are recognized as the two most important American still-life painters of the mid-nineteenth century. Whereas Roesen specialized in fruit pieces and bouquets of flowers, Francis concentrated upon luncheon and dessert still lifes, in which oranges, nuts, glasses of wine, compotes and pitchers are arranged both artfully and casually upon a tabletop covered with a white cloth. The dessert picture connotes not only an extended, multiple-course meal, but also abundance and the leisure to enjoy it, thus making such still lifes paradigms of Victorian middle-class prosperity.

Condition Report: on panel, paint well adhered to surface, has been cleaned, 2 inch verticle area to right margin has been restored (only visible with black light), scattered strengthening

Shipping: Requires 3rd Party Shipping (view shipping information)
