211. JOHN ELLIS WOOL

“weak imbecilic if not pusillanimous conduct of president buchanan”
(1784-1869). Union major general with distinguished service since the War of 1812. War-date ALS, 2½pp, small 8vo, Troy, NY, Dec 11, 1863. Exceptional content. Five months after his retirement, Wool writes from his home to George M. Laughlin in Cincinnati in response to a request for an autograph letter for the Sanitary Fair. Wool writes, “...It was my intention to have connected with my letter a condensed history of the state and condition of the country previous to the commencement of the rebellion, the most gigantic and bloody the world has ever known; the causes which led to it, including a notice of the weak and imbecilic if not pusillanimous conduct of President Buchanan and those who have prolonged the war to the present time. But a lame hand prevents, arising from a sprain, which gives me great pain when I use it. It is however nearly completed and when published will show what disappointed ambition can accomplish and what great evils it has brought on our prosperous country, the most to any other on the globe. It has caused blood to flow in torrents, pestilence, famine and desolation to lay waste the Southern states, and tens of thousands of widows and orphans to weep over the loss of their brave protectors who perished in the field of battle defending the Union. Such is civil war.” Wool concludes, “See the letter of Hon. John A. Griswold herewith enclosed with one to General Cass [not present]. The first is an appeal to the Democratic party not to abandon their country in this time of need. The other to Gen. Cass has been prophetic. Every word has been literally fulfilled long since...” Boldly penned and signed. Single vertical fold; else a Very Fine example. A general since 1841, his gallantry at Buena Vista earned Wool a sword and the thanks of Congress. His timely order of troops to Fortress Monroe saved it for the Union and was a disadvantage to the Confederacy throughout the war. He directed the occupation of Norfolk and was retired from active service in Aug 1863, the oldest officer to command during the Civil War on either side. Accompanied by a very nice steel engraving in uniform above facsimile signature.
