Constable executed many large, fully finished studio paintings that earned critical acclaim throughout his career; but his smaller oil studies sketched directly from nature are also highly prized for their spontaneous sensibility. These more intimate sketches reveal the artist's interest in capturing the interplay of light and shadow across land and sky.

Golden tones dominate the lower section of the present picture, as sunlight falls across the trees, stone wall, thatched roof, and open field. Passages of sky and vegetation are loosely described, yet the composition is carefully organized. The scene is set against the diagonal lines of distant hills and beneath the horizontal band of clouds; the tallest tree in the center neatly divides the picture, while surrounding trees provide accents of verticality.

Condition Report: relined, lightly cleaned and revarnished, very minor strengthening

Shipping: Requires 3rd Party Shipping (view shipping information)
