JOHN C. ROBINSON: (1817 -1897) Union brigadier general, received Medal of Honor for Laurel Hill, severely wounded at Spottsylvania. War-date A.L.S. "Jno. C. Robinson", 3pp. 4to., "Hdqrs. 1st Mich. Inf., Camp Union near Bladensburg, Md.", Oct. 6, 1861 to his friend Smith concerning war news and problems with a certain Mr. Raymond, in small part: "...I arrived in Washington in command of this regiment two weeks ago. I had six different regiments tendered to me before the War Dept. would allow me to take one...I have now one of the finest in the field. I regret very much that I did not receive your letter sooner...I would have joined with you. It is a shame and pity that d-d scoundrel should go unwhipped...I would have preferred charges...I watched the First Tribune for some reply...as I saw none. I concluded he determined to remain quiet. He is a malicious devil...he was planning some villancy from the start...I did not know where to address you until I called on Capt. Willard of your regiment...address Col. Jno. C. R. 1st Michigan...I will try to go with you to Baltimore and see our friends, who I hope are good Union men...". Tape and stain affects the last page with minor toning, else very good. $200-300
