JOHN C. FREMONT CAMPAIGN RIBBON.
JOHN C. FREMONT CAMPAIGN RIBBON. An unusual, 1856 silk from Illinois helping coat-tail candidates for local offices. Some scattered foxing and light age stains, still nice. John Charles Fremont, 1813-90, the first Republican candidate for President, also ran on the Rump Know-Nothing ticket. He would later withdraw his candidacy as an Independent Republican in 1864 giving support to the incumbent, Abraham Lincoln. A distinguished explorer, the "Great Pathfinder's" exploits were chronicled mostly by his wife, Jessie -- the daughter of Thomas Hart Benton.
