JOHN BROWN, JR.
"One of my two half brothers, who fell in the attack at Harper's Ferry Oct. 185…his remains have come into my possession…"

(b. 1821) Eldest son of the abolitionist John Brown. After his father’s actions in “Bloody Kansas”, John Jr. was arrested, mistreated while in prison, and later released. John Jr. might have been aware of the plans for the raid at Harpers Ferry in Virginia. He was not a part of the raid itself, yet he knew all the details and even was part of the process. Lengthy, fine content A.L.S. 3pp. 4to., Bay Island, Lake Erie, Sept. 15, 1882, to Prof. L. Fowler in New York, in small part: "...My dear old Friend, Within the past year or two I had received from you several papers and at least one letter; and now comes nothing...Have you by this time concluded that I am either very neglectful...or that I am indifferent to my friends?...But, pleasantry aside, let me assure you that there are no 'oases' in the desert of my life where I rest with more complete satisfaction than the one I found among that dear Phrenological Fraternity...". Brown continues with bizarre news: "...The brother whose death you refer to in such feeling terms, is one of my two half brothers, who fell in the attack at Harper's Ferry Oct. 1859. Through a strange concurrence of circumstances his remains have come into my possession within the past few days, now nearly 23 years since his death. If I had not long since been a firm believer in Spiritualism, I should have no key to that which in this case I might say is stranger than fiction...". With more friendly content, near fine condition, with original envelope.

Estimate: $750 - 1,000.
