JOHN BELL PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN ENVELOPES. Lot of 3 unused patriotic covers, two featuring portraits of John Bell, 1860 candidate for president and opponent of Lincoln, one a jugate with Bell and Everett. Both have been over-stamped in red "Traitor." One with "Both Bells Have Turned." A slave owner, Bell was considered moderate for his conciliatory position on admitting new territories without slavery -- a position that infuriated southern politicians and made him a compromise candidate that could be supported by Northerners and former Whigs. One envelope includes a clever rebus. All quite fine. PLEASE NOTE: THIS LOT WILL BE SOLD ON EBAY LIVE AUCTIONS BETWEEN 1:00-2:00pm EASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME ON MAY 10, 2002.
