JOHN ADAMS
(1735 - 1826) Second President of the United States and a drafter of the Declaration of Independence, which he also signed. He later joined Franklin and Jay to negotiate peace with Great Britain. Good association D.S. "John Adams", 1p. legal folio, Quincy, Nov. 25, 1818, a legal document in which in consideration of the the payment of the sum of one dollar, Adams forever releases all claims upon his: "lands, tenements and hereditaments" in Medford "...which belonged to me in right of Abigail my wife, late of Quincy deceased, and which were bequeather to her...by her father in his last will and testament..." to his third and youngest son, Thomas Boyston Adams. Four light toned spots, short fold splits repaired on verso, else very good. Abigail Adams had inherited this land from her father, though John had managed the lands on her behalf for most of their marriage. Abigail had died less than a month earlier and John, who had always considered her lands near worthless, was undoubtedly happy to be relieved of the burden. In 1805, Thomas Adams settled in Quincy and in 1811 was appointed chief justice of the Circuit Court of Common Pleas. Like his brother Charles, Thomas had problems with alcoholism, and would die in Quincy in 1832, deeply in debt.
