Second President of the United States (1797-1801) and first Vice President; helped write and was <b>Signer</b> of the Declaration of Independence. Adams defended the British soldiers accused of murder in the Boston Massacre and helped negotiate the Treaty of Paris with Great Britain. Partly printed DS, 1p, folio, Washington, Washington, DC, Feb 3, 1801. Four language ship’s papers permitting Henry Pettis <i>“commander of the Schooner called the Grand Turk... lying at present in the port of Newport bound for Havana and laden with butter, lard, sausages, flour, beef, cheese, hams, onions, hoops, shooks, potatoes, empty sugar boxes, cider, </i>[and]<i> paper to depart.</i>..” Large and boldly signed. Countersigned by Secretary of State </span><b><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:windowtext;text-transform:uppercase'>John Marshall</span></b><span style='font-size:12.0pt; font-family:Arial;color:windowtext'> (1755-1835) appointed that same year as the fourth Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court, the principal founder of the US system of constitutional law. Marshall was an officer in the Continental Army and had served with Washington at Valley Forge. Also signed by </span><b><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:windowtext;text-transform: uppercase'>William Ellery</span></b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:windowtext'> (1727-1820) as Collector of Customs at Newport, who was a <b>Signer</b> of the Declaration of Independence from Rhode Island. Light general toning; occasional light foxing; small paper loss at fold intersections of minimal affect; o/w Fine. Scarce combination as Marshall served but one year as secretary of state.
