JOHN ADAMS
(1735-1826) Second President of the United States and a drafter of the Declaration of Independence, which he also signed. Adams later joined Franklin and Jay to negotiate peace with Great Britain. Bold signature in his later years, a franking signature accomplished at center of an envelope panel, Quincy, Oct. 4 [docketed 1823], addressed to his grandson Thomas Boylston Adams, then a cadet at Norwich Academy, Vermont. One of seven of children of Adams' third son,Thomas Boylston Adams (1772-1832), Thomas B. Adams, Jr. was born in 1809, dying at a very young age in 1837. It appears he was cadet at Norwich from 1824- 1828, then going on to serve in the Seminole Wars in 1836 - probably KIA in Olokikaha. At bottom left of the cover is an interesting docket possibly in the hand of Charles F. Adams: "John Adams ? 88. C.F.A. 1 III 1902". Mounted, very good, and a nice family association.

Estimate: $2,000 - 3,000.
