JOHN ADAMS FRANKED POSTAL COVER
153. JOHN ADAMS (1735 - 1826) Second President of the United States and a drafter of the Declaration of Independence, which he also signed. He later joined Franklin and Jay to negotiate peace with Great Britain. Rare franked postal cover (front panel only) as President, addressed to "Mrs. Adams Quincy near Boston" and franked "J. Adams" beneath the addressee. Interestingly, Adams was wrong about his wife's whereabouts: the Quincy address has been stricken, and notes on the cover show that on Oct. 14, 1799 the letter was re-directed from Quincy: "To be left at Col. Smith's in east Chester [New York]". Colonel Smith was the husband of Adams' daughter Abigail (Nabby) Adams Smith. She was en route to Philadelphia to rejoin her husband and had stopped there along the way. Expertly mounted, near fine.$1,200-1,500
