JOHN A. WINSLOW: (1811 - 1873) Union naval officer and captain of the "Kearsarge", he was active against Confederate blockade runners, most notably in his battle against Raphael Semmes' "Alabama". Rare signature, possibly war-date: "Jno. A. Winslow Captain Kearsarge", matted with an L.S. of Secretary of the Navy ISAAC TOUCEY 1p. 4to., Washington, Dec. 20, 1860 to Winslow appointing him Light House Inspector of the Second Light House District. Coincidentally, Southern sympathizer Toucey signed this letter on the day South Carolina seceded from the Union. Also matted with an engraving of Winslow. Slight smudge in right margin of Toucey's letter, else very good, all set into a wood frame. Unexamined out of frame. $150-250
