John Dahlgren Signed Document Regarding “Rocket Tubes”
JOHN A. DAHLGREN (1809-1870). Rear Admiral, Naval Ordnance Innovator and Commander of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron during the Civil War, called the "Father of American Naval Ordnance."
April 13, 1847-Dated, Manuscript Document Signed, “Jno A. Dahlgren - A. Tester. Ordinance,” three pages, measuring 9.75” x 8”, at the Ordnance Office, Navy Yard, Washington (D.C.), Choice Extremely Fine. This impressive, beautifully written ordinance report is to Commodore Warrington, regarding the testing of 2.5” Rocket tubes provided by Mr. Prosser. It has excellent content and reads, in part:

“... as in the first trials, they have failed to meet a principal condition of the contract...tubes should equal in strength, Bar Iron of one inch square, broken by a strain of 50,000 Lbs.” Then John Dahlgren recommends that the, “2 1/2 inch tube be replaced by 4 inch of equal cost.”

Overall, this is an impressive and extremely clean, crisp looking handwritten document with excellent eye appeal. It is very well written upon period wove paper that have just the slightest hint of tone along the left margin.
