JOHANN HEINRICH VON BERNSTORFF
(1862 - 1939) German politician and the ambassador to the United States and Mexico from 1908 to 1917. Believed to have undertaken subversive activities while serving as Ambassador to the U.S. S.P. 9 1/2" x 13 1/2" b/w, a chest up pose dated 1917. On the verso, "The Outlook" journalist Edward L. Conn noted: "Presented to me on Feb. 3, 1917...at 1 o'clock, one hour before receiving his passports...". Bernstorff was returned home on February 3, 1917, when Woodrow Wilson severed diplomatic relations with Germany. Very good.
