John Szarkowski selected the present photograph for LOOKING
AT PHOTOGRAPHS: 100 PICTURES FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART (1973). The text that accompanied this image proffered the following question. "Today's best photographers discover more and more within what would seem less and less. Who would have thought that a picture, a mystery, and a joke might be coaxed from subject matter as profoundly banal as that represented in Joel Meyerowitz's picture?" (p. 208).
