Joel Meyerowitz began his career as an art director. While assigned to a job that Robert Frank photographed, Meyerowitz was inspired to become a photographer. He began using a 35mm camera and black and white film, shooting street pictures that recalled Lee Friedlander and Garry Winogrand. Meyerowitz distinguished himself when he turned to color film. When Richard Pare wanted to acquire Meyerowitz's work for the Seagram's Collection, he asked to have dye transfers made. Pare and Meyerowitz collaborated on a selection of his street work slides. At that time, Pare showed Meyerowitz his own photographs made with a medium format 4 x 5 camera. Impressed by the quality of the larger format, Meyerowitz soon acquired an 8 x 10 view Deardorff view camera, with which he has been closely identified ever since.
