JOACHIM PEIPER
Accused of the massacre of American prisoners at Malmedy

(1915 - 1976) SS-Standartenführer and the Waffen-SS's youngest regimental colonel, a personal adjutant to Himmler and tank commander who saw combat on both the Eastern and Western fronts. Peiper is most remembered for the massacre of American prisoners at Malmedy. Although not tried for that crime, he was convicted of the murder of prisoners and jailed for eleven years. Retiring to France, he was identified and gunned-down at his home, which was burned. Rare war-date signed document, the SS service record and health books issued to SS Panzer Grenadier Gerhard Farr. Two separate books are present, with the service record showing that Farr was born in 1927, drafted for the Labor Service on March 31, 1944, and volunteered to serve in the SS Panzer Grenadiers Training and Reserve Battalion I on Sep. 11, 1944. On Nov. 13, 1944 Peiper signs the book, apparently activating the young soldier and mustering him into the Liebstandarte Adolf Hitler and placing an official stamp across the endorsement. Thirty-four days later Farr would likely have been present during the massacre of 84 American prisoners at Malmedy.

Estimate: $1,200 - 1,500.
