JIM DOW (American, b. 1942) COCA-COLA SIGN ON THE HIGHWAY U.s. 72, BURNSVILLE, MISSISSIPPI title, date, edition, print date, printer's initials and signature inscribed in black ink on verso chromogenic color print 16 x 20 3/16 in. (40.6 x 51.3 cm) 1978 printed 1990 by Robert Korn of Bob Korn Imaging, Orleans, Massachusetts this print is number 8 from an edition of 15 PROVENANCE Private Collection, NEW YORK Jim Dow explores American culture by examining aspects of the quintessential American landscape, which appear surreal when extracted from their context. Both of these photographs (Lots 143 and 144) convey a commercialized landscape, making a comment, whether deliberate or unintentional, about American values. Human presence is not what interests Dow. Instead he appreciates how place can evoke an American spirit and identity. Those enjoying the delights of the Dairy Queen are only peripheral information, as their forms are blurred in contrast to the static quality of the architectural structure. Not surprisingly, Jim Dow worked as a printer for Walker Evans during the late 1960s.
