Hungerford Smith around the turn of the last Century in New York. Smith had developed a way of preserving fruit juices and making syrups for year-round use. He also developed his own root beer syrup and marketed his syrups to other drugstore owners. His syrups were of high quality and his Rochester Root Beer brand was well renowned. A&W Root Beer started making their root beer in California in the 1920's using syrup from J. Hungerford Smith (JHS). In 1963, The J. Hungerford Smith Company purchased the A&W Company , retaining the A&W name. The Rochester Root Beer trademark was last owned by A&W. This Rochester Root Beer barrel is believed to date to the Mid-Century. It measures 31" tall x 21.5" in diameter, and has a 4.25" x 4.35" tap with handle.
