The White House, Washington, September 5, 1961. To Henry W. It is gratifying to know that my old friends are supporting me and your kind words are very much appreciated. With every good wish." Included is the retained carbon copy of the August 19, 1961, letter President Kennedy refers to, initialed by Borntraeger "HWB". In full: "I am enclosing some reprints from the many editorials supporting your recommended legislation to create a new U.S. Disarmament Agency for World Peace and Security. The action of the press has stirred up real public support for establishing this new agency. On the local level, I've been working with various civic and religious organizations in order to gain greater support for your program. I have been most gratified to discover a hearty approval of creating this new agency so that the greatest possible effort can be made in establishing a realistic disarmament policy. It's been a long time since we last saw each other at Stanford before World War II. I've followed with keen interest your activities since then and wish to express congratulations on the fine job which you are doing." The archive is comprised of letters received and retained copies of letters sent by Henry W. Borntraeger to President Kennedy: (1) TLS: "Ralph A. Dungan" as Special Assistant to the President, August 14, 1961, thanking him for his "support of bills to create a U.S. Disarmament Agency, S. 2180 and H.R. 7936." (2) Retained copy of a September 20, 1961, telegram sent to President Kennedy about the House passing his proposal for a Disarmament Agency, urging that the President mention disarmament in his United Nations address. (3) TLS: "Ralph A. Dungan", September 29, 1961, enclosing the President's September 25, 1961 address to the United Nations "discussing the problems facing the world today and setting forth our Nation's approach toward the solution of those problems." (4) Text of the President's U.N. address "as actually delivered", 9p, 8.5" x 14". (5) retained copy of a 7p, 7.25" x 10.5", February 17, 1962, typed letter sent to President Kennedy making "a plea for continued abstinence of nuclear testing in the atmosphere, and to offer some suggestions for reducing international tensions." On September 26, 1961, President Kennedy signed the bill creating the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency (ACDA). It still exists. On August 5, 1963, President Kennedy and Soviet Premier Khrushchev signed the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty prohibiting above-ground nuclear testing. An interesting archive relating to nuclear disarmament with its centerpiece being an exceptional letter signed by President Kennedy. Staple holes and light diagonal crease in upper left corner of President Kennedy's letter, else in very fine condition. Seven items plus envelopes. Fine condition.
