JFK Assassination Letter
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Reverend Huber typed letter signed, dated 8 May 1969. Here, Huber signs a letter to Hugh Sidey of Time magazine fervently denying that he told reporters outside of Dallas' Parkland Hospital that President Kennedy was dead. Letter references portions of Sidey's letter to Huber, which Huber refutes. Lengthy letter reads in small part: ''…Please accept this letter in the spirit with which it is written, that is, to clarify a number of statements made in your letter to me. Shortly after coming out of the emergency room, a secret service agent approached me and gave me to understand that I was to give information to no one about the President's condition…I was approached by two reporters, a man and a woman, who in rapid fire succession asked me the following questions: 'Are you from Holy Trinity Church?' I answered 'Yes.' 'Are you Father Huber?' I answered 'Yes.' 'Were you with the President?' I answered 'Yes.' 'Is he dead?' I answered 'I don't know anything.'…these reporters were trying to trap me into an answer. In no uncertain terms I concluded with: 'You will have to wait for an announcement.'…I am deeply concerned about this matter because I have gone down in the eyes of the world as a Catholic priest who betrayed the confidence placed in him by a secret service agent…When a reporter asked me if the President was dead, I did not say: 'He's dead all right.'…I never told any reporter or group of reporters the President was dead…NOR DID I RUB MY MOUTH AND BEG GOD'S FORGIVENESS AND SAY 'HE WAS UNCONSCIOUS'…'' Signed ''Rev. Oscar L. Huber C.M.'' in blue ink. Letter measures 8.5'' x 11'' on two pages with staple at top left, minor toning and two folds. Near fine.
