(JEWISH MERCHANT'S CHECK FROM MEMPHIS)
652. JEWISH MERCHANT'S CHECK FROM MEMPHIS Partly-printed Bank of Memphis check, 1p. 12mo., Memphis, Tenn., Oct. 5, 1861, made out to a certain N. Greenwald & Co., for the princely sum of sixty two hundred dollars. Research shows that Nathan Greenwald was a well-respected Jewish merchant living in Memphis at the time of the Civil War, and cites that he and other merchants, of the city would, in part: "...Take gold, silver, and precious stones...even...greenbacks...[and] of the kind of money known as Confederate money or white paper we will not take...". The check is finely engraved depicting two young women surrounded by scenes of agriculture and bears multiple cancellation marks indicating that the check was transferred to "Lehmanuel Swartz & Co.". Worthy of further research. Overall very good to near fine. $100-150
