As a member of Quantrill’s Raiders and later as leader of his own gang of outlaws perpetrating bank and train robberies throughout the Missouri region, Jesse’s daring exploits won worldwide notoriety. Cabinet photograph of famed image of the outlaw in death roped to board at St. Joseph, MO, on Apr 3, 1882. On verso are darkly penned biographical and other fascinating details of his life and death. Image slightly faded; mount evidences light soiling; four pin punctures at top of mount, one ¼" within photographic image; else VG. Text provides Mr. Seidenfaden, the undertaker’s statement, “‘<i>Apr. 3. Mr. Jesse James killed. Number 11S casket with shroud, $250. Shroud $10. Paid.</i>’” Further, “<i>This picture took by James W. Graham / Alex Lobo Studio / single plate 8x10 studio camera with corpse roped to board. Two dollars each</i>.” Also stated, Jesse was “<i>5'8" 155 lbs. Democrat Left-handed missing nub of middle finger, left hand</i>”; he was a “<i>Southern Loyalist Guerilla—Rode w/Quantrill</i>” and was “<i>Murdered 3 April 1882</i>.” His Kearny, MO, headstone states, “<i>In Loving Remembrance / Jesse W. James / died April 3, 1882 / Aged 34 Years, 6 Months, 28 Days / Murdered By A Traitor and Coward Whose Name is Not Worthy to Appear Here</i>.” Further, “‘<i>The House On The Hill’”</i> in St. Joseph was “<i>Owned by: Mrs. August Salteman</i>” and lists it as being “<i>1 Storey, Green Shuttered / 2 Bedroom / Sitting Room / Dining Room / Attached Kitchen / Rear Porch / View of Both Kansas & Missouri Rivers / Rented Under Name of Thomas Howard / $14 A Month Rent</i>.” Beneath is quote by <b><font size=-1>Zerelda James</font></b>: “<i>Confusion Hill—‘Jesse finally come up with a place to match his prominence’</i>.” The writer also states, "<i>Shot by Robert Ford from behind as he dusted a picture of the famed race horse Skyrocket. Shot one inch behind the rear of his right ear. Ford used a .44 Smith & Wesson single action revolver. Wire sent to Sheriff Timberlake, Henry H. Craig, Governor Thomas Crittenden, ‘I have killed Jesse James. Bob Ford’.</i>” Also quoted is the poem, “<i>Oh Jesse had a wife to mourn for his life, Three Children, They were brave; but that Dirty Little Coward that shot Mr. Howard has laid Jesse James in the grave</i>.” Attributed to “<i>Billy Eashade, MO. sharecropper</i>.”
