Oxford, at the University Press … 1805FIRST EDITION, pages (4), 268, 4to, original boards, uncut, neatly rebacked : very goodA valuable and accurate survey, considered by Palgrave as "of great and deserved authority ; and comprises in a reasonable compass a greater amount of information respecting the coins of the kingdom ... than is perhaps to be met with in any other publication."ALSO WITH THIS LOT: BILLING ( Archibald ), FRS, MD. The Science of Gems, Jewels, Coins, and Medals, ancient and modern. Bell & Daldy, 1867. FIRST EDITION, with 18 mounted photo plates and a few other illustrs, pp xi, 221 and leaf of adverts, 8vo, original blue cloth, gilt, small oval photo onlay on upper board, edges gilt, by Burn, with ticket : binding stained but sound and strong : a good to very good copy.Billing (1791-1881), native of Crumlin, Dublin, physician to the London Hospital and proponent of the valve closure theory of the origin of the first and second heart sounds. He disagreed with the theories of Laennec and Hope but "was amongst the earliest teachers in London to make auscultation, as introduced by Laennec, a part of general instruction." - DNB. "He published The Science of Jems [sic], Jewels, Coins and Medals (1867), an elaborate textbook, illustrated with photographs. A Mrs Billing is named as the translator of the book's appendix - the Autobiography of Benedetto Pistrucci.
