JEFFERSON, THOMAS
(1743 - 1826) Third President of the United States, author and signer of the Declaration of Independence, ceased the importation of slaves to America. Rare A.L.S. as Secretary of State, 1p. 8vo., Philadelphia, Oct. 8, 1792, to William Rawle, United States Attorney for Pennsylvania. In part: ""...I have the honor to enclose...the original process served on the servant of Mr. Van Berkel minister resident of the United States, with the receipt of the constable..."". On the verso is a transcription in another hand of an indictment against ""C.J.D.L."" for: ""...bodily harm & violence to the person of the said F.B. M..."". With address panel in Jefferson's hand. A vertical tear affects much of the text but not the signature, repaired fold tears, some browning and staining throughout principally at upper and lower margins, overall good.
