JEFFERSON DAVIS

118. JEFFERSON DAVIS

davis refers to his day in court
(1808-1889). President of Confederate States of America; secretary of war appointed by Franklin Pierce (1853-57); US senator from Mississippi. ALS, 1½pp on separate leaves, small 8vo, Lennoxville, Canada, Nov 11, 1867. With original transmittal envelope addressed in his holograph. To J. D. Corse in Montreal. From his sanctuary in Canada, Davis contemplates his possible trial for treason in Richmond, Davis writes, in full, “Notwithstanding the reports of our arrangement by which I should be relieved of the necessity of going to Richmond, the fact is that nothing has been done to assure us of a trial or to remove the obligation of attendance. When I leave here it will be my object to pass without delay to the end of the journey, it will not therefore be probable that I shall see you again before going. Will you send me a statement of the investment with which you allowed me to trouble you, such a description as will suffice for any use. Present my affectionate remembrance to Mrs. Corse, to Miss Smith and the children. I am as ever very truly your friend...” Boldly penned and signed in brown ink. Old tape residue along left edge and on vertical fold beneath signature on second leaf and on blank verso of first leaf repairing partial fold separation and also partially along edge. All of no affect to text. Having been freed on bond at Richmond on May 5 and his subsequent removal to Canada, in October it appeared that Davis would have to return for trial on charge of treason which he welcomed, feeling he would indeed be vindicated. With the passage of time however, hope evaporated and Davis never stood trial at all. Davis had refused a pardon believing it would be an admission of guilt. The government felt there was not enough evidence to convict for conspiracy in the assassination of Lincoln and it was quite possible he would be acquitted on charges of treason. Important historical reference.
