(JEFFERSON DAVIS)
A interesting war-date CDV engraving of Confederate president Jefferson Davis, with the intriguing date of "June 6th 1866" on verso and a printed period note, in full: "KEEP IT BEFORE THE WORLD. The following statement, said to be authentic and published by us some weeks ago, will lose nothing by repetition. It should be kept before the world as a triumphant vindication of the South against the slanders of her former enemies, the latter, themselves, being the witnesses: 'According to an official report of the War Department, the number of Union prisoners taken during the rebellion was 260, 940; Rebel prisoners 200,000. Number of Union prisoners who died in confinement 22,576, or a little over eight percent; of Rebels who died in Northern prisons, 26,430, or thirteen percent'". Bureaucratic side-stepping and mismanagement forced the postponement of Davis' trial numerous times and once again on June 6, 1866 the trial, to be held in Richmond, was delayed. Owned by an ardent Southerner who was behind his former president all the way. Soiled with wear, trimmed at the top, else good.
