JEFFERSON DAVIS
(1808 - 1889) President of the Confederacy who led his armies beyond the surrender at Appomattox. Good content L.S. "Jefferson Davis", 2pp. 4to., [Mississippi], Oct. 18, 1877 to a Mr. Hearsy. In part: "...Mr. Nahurn Capen [?] of Boston, whom I have know for many years, as a god States' Rights Democrat & laborious explorer of political history is...engaged in the preparation of a work entitled the History of Democracy...having exhausted his means, he was engaged in raising 15 or 20,000 dollars which would enable to complete the work...He asked if I knew anyone who could contribute...He says 'there was one reason for the use of such a work 27 years ago, there are a thousand reasons for ir now, in view of the experience of the Country since 1861'. I hope the historical truths as collected & presented by him may be very useful to the Country hereafter....". Of course, Davis held fast to the "Lost Cause" until his death. Capen's effort was likely of no aid - we can find no record of the book having been published, leadin us to believe this was a Capen caper.

Estimate: $750 - 1,000.
