JEFFERSON DAVIS ALS, 2pp (single sheet), Sept 29, 1877, 4to, Mississippi City, to Col George R Phelan. After discussing a visit by Phelan, Davis comments on his former General, Joseph E Johnston (1807-91). Reads in part, "...I suppose it will be necessary to notice [Joe] Johnston's narrative as I know he is malignant and skillful in the supporesis viri et suggestio falsi, I have not however read his book. If his misrepresentations of me were alone to be noticed, it is probable that I never should. He was indebted to me for his advancement in the U.S. Army, and for great forebearance, if not kindness, subsequently; there is no mode so easy of discharging such obligations as abuse and a pretence of having been unjustly treated..." Johnston detested Davis, especially in view of the fact that Davis had summarily dismissed the overcautious General, and he made sure to crucify Davis in his memoirs.
