JEFFERSON DAVIS ALS, 2 1/2pp, May 8, 1876, 8vo, New Orleans, to Mr Mikell, interesting content re an attempt by a Confederate Colonel to deliver a letter to Abraham Lincoln. In part, "...Col Thos H Taylor, of the 1st K[entuck]y Regt was sent with a letter to Presdt [Abraham] Lincoln, but not allowed an interview with him. Genl [Winfield] Scott took the letter, and after some delay, gave Col Taylor an assurance that the letter would be answered. That assurance was not fulfilled. The letter however probably prevented the execution of the captives. Col Taylor is, I believe, still living...My impression is that he was not a Brig Genl of the Confederate Army, but he is callled 'Genl', and may bear such rank in some organization..." Thomas H Taylor (1825-1901) was a Confederate Brigadier General, who was captured at Visksburg. Light mounting traces on verso of last page, o/w VG. $3,000-4,000
