A.L.S. as Secretary of War, 4pp. 8vo., Washington, Nov. 9, 1856 to future West Point Chaplain John W. French discussing an appointment and other matters. In part: "...I have been led to fear that which your appearance indicated when I last saw you over exertion and consequent injury to your health. Having more than once in my life had sad experience from attempting too much, or perhaps more properly attempting all that it was desirable to achieve without having sufficient means, you will I hope pardon me for urging upon you the mexican festival lente [sic]...". After discussing the appointment of an officer, Davis laments the preacher's absence from his Washington congregation: "...We are still without a Pastor at the Epiphany...to day the Missionary for the District gave us a beautiful, and truly powerful discourse on community of the human race, and the obligation imposed upon us to bear the burthens one of another. It is a sad thing to your old Congregation to see your char unoccupied by yourself by some is your absence more sadly felt than by my Wife. and myself we console ourselves with the hope that the change which is not good for us, may nevertheless be good for one we so much love, and open to you a wider field of usefulness..."
