JEBB ( John ), FRS, Bp of Limerick. A speech on the characters and deaths, of the Rev. John William Reid, and John Sargint. Esq. delivered from the chair of the Historical Society, of the University of Dublin, on Wednesday the twelfth of December, 1798. The second edition … Published at the request of the Historical Society. Dublin : Printed by William Jones, No. 26, College-Green, opposite the College, 1800Pages (4), 35, (1, blank), with the half-title, 8vo, recent wrapper : a very good copy. First published 1799. This second edition is scarce, with ESTC recording just three copies, all in Dublin : Di, Dk and Dt. The original edition is far from common either, with just eight copies located in Britain and Ireland, and two elsewhere : NNC-RB and CSmH. Jebb (1775-1833), native of Drogheda, was an active member of the historical society, and the experience he acquired from taking part in its proceedings well equipped him for public debate. For his services in maintaining order in his parish, Mogorbane, Co Tipperary, during the disturbances following the 1822 famine, he was made Bishop of Limerick. On 10 July 1824 he made a speech in the House of Lords on the Tithe Commutation Bill, which Wilberforce described as ‘one of the most able ever delivered in parliament’ and which was seen as a powerful defence of the position of the Irish establishment (ODNB).ALSO WITH THIS LOT: (1) GRATTAN ( Henry ). Mr. Garattan's speech in the House of Commons of Ireland, on Saturday the 26th of March, 1791, on the Responsibility Bill. Dublin : Printed by James Moore, 1791. FIRST (ONLY) EDITION, pages 29, (3, blank), 8vo, recent wrapper : a very good copy. ESTC has L, C, LONu, D, O, Di / CSmH. Grattan's splendid but fruitless effort, an act intended to make the treasury accountable to the Irish rather than the British parliament.(2) STANHOPE ( Charles ), Earl Stanhope. A letter from Earl Stanhope to the right honourable Edmund Burke : containing a short answer to his late speech on the French revolution. Third edition. Dublin : Printed by P. Byrne, 108, Grafton-Street, 1790. FIRST IRISH EDITION, 16-pages, 8vo, recent paper wrapper : a very good copy. Defending Richard Price against the strictures contained in Burke's Reflections. Two editions were published at London during the same year. This Dublin edition is uncommon.(3) TUCKER ( Josiah ). Dean Tucker's arguments on the propriety of an union between Great Britain and Ireland, written some years since, and now first published in this tract upon the same subject. By the Rev. Dr. Clarke ... Dublin: printed for J. Milliken, 32, Grafton-street, 1799. FIRST IRISH EDITION, pages (2), ii, 63, (1, blank), 8vo, recent paper wrapper : with some light foxing but otherwise a very good copy. MacCormack D1.
