Watercolor on paper. Featuring a child. Signed and attr. Jean Souverbie (French, 1891-1981). 23.4 x 18.3 in. (59.5 x 46.5 cm). Jean Souverbie was a French painter known for his sensuous depictions of Classical subject matter. Influenced by Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, and the Cubist painter Georges Braque, he explored his interest in Neoclassical ideals and Greek sculpture throughout his monumental nudes, seascapes, and still lifes. Born on March 21, 1891 in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, he went on to design stage sets for operas and ballets. Today, Souverbie’s work can be found in the collections of the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris, the Museum of Art in Philadelphia, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Musee du Petit Palais in Paris, among others. Souverbie died on November 6, 1981 in Paris, France. PROVENANCE: Southern Ontario estate
