JEAN HARRIS
(1923-2013) Headmistress of a girls' school best known for the March 1980 murder of her husband, noted cardiologist and author of "The Complete Scarsdale Diet", Dr. Herman Tarnower. Tried and convicted of second-degree murder, she spent 11 years in jail before her sentence was commuted by Gov. Mario Cuomo in 1992. Uncommon A.L.S. 3pp. 12mo., Bedford Hills, NY, "May 1980". Less than a year after her fatal shooting of her husband, Harris writes from prison to Mrs. Edwin Knopf of Los Angeles about her loss of her husband, in part: "...I can't tell you how happy I was to hear from you. I know H's death was a heartbreaking loss to Alfred and Helen. What some of H's friends don't seem to understand is that I miss him most of all. You are very kind to ask if there is anything I need. There really isn't. Family and old friends, and even total strangers, have been wonderfully kind. My small room has become an annex to the library! There are two books I would like to have...We work on [other inmates'] vocabulary....There are some very intelligent women here but they have lived in intellectual Saharas. There are days when I feel as though 'shit' were the only word they knew...". With original holograph envelope, very good.
