Howard Walsh (Fort Worth, Texas);<BR>Walsh Family Art Trust<BR><BR>These companion paintings by an unidentified hand draw upon still life developments in the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain and Italy, from the first three decades of the seventeenth century, at a time when still life painting was emerging as a specialty genre, and baskets were commonly depicted as containers for fruit and flowers. The broad handling and the treatment of the cloth with gilt thread suggests a Spanish origin for the pictures. The works probably date no later than about 1630, after which time still life arrangements in this genre generally became more complex.<BR><BR>A remnant of a signature and/or inscription is located on the far left side of the white tablecloth, on the portion which falls over the edge. The inscription seems to read "<I>A Fe…</B></I>" possibly a shortened form of <I>Anno Fecit,</B></I> a common Latin phrase for "<I>year in which I made this</B></I>" used by seventeenth-century painters.
