(1745 - 1829) American jurist and statesman, member of the Continental Congress who also helped Franklin negotiate peace with Great Britain, first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. It is only by adhering to those leading Principles to which you allude, that stability in our Counsels can be preserved...While Legislatures and Statesmen are guided by those Principles, our Constitution will be secure from violations -- wisdom and moderation will cherish Union and harmony...From a People who know how to estimate men and measures, they who with you chearfully and indefatigably exert themselves are promoting the General Welfare and the public weal, may expect approbation and support..."".
