(JAPANESE SURRENDER PHOTOGRAPHS)
223. JAPANESE SURRENDER PHOTOGRAPHS A fine collection of twenty-three Army Signal Corps photographs, each measuring 8" x 10" b/w, most of which show various events surrounding the unconditional surrender of the Japanese forces to the Allies and a few other subjects, dated between July 18 and September 2, 1945. Each photograph has a helpful caption on the verso explaining the image, and includes three images of the formal surrender ceremony aboard the U.S.S. Missouri on Sept. 2, 1945. More interesting is a group of fourteen images showing the preliminary negotiations before the formal surrender, which were held in Manila on August 20, 1945. The Japanese sent a 16-man delegation to prepare arrangements for the formal surrender in Tokyo Bay. Images include MacArthur greeting the delegation led by Lt. Gen. Dawabe Takashiro at Nichols Field in Manila, shots of the formal negotiations, other informal conversations between American and Japanese officers, Takashiro presenting his credentials from Emperor Hirohito to Lt. Gen. Richard Sutherland, as well as a pile of samurai swords and various side arms left in the anteroom at U.S. Headquarters in Manila. The group also includes two images of U.S. troops entering Yokahama, Japan on Sept. 2, 1945, two images of the conference site and Truman's quarters during the Potsdam Conference, as well as a well known image of Truman and King George VI aboard the H.M.S. Renown off Plymouth, England. Of the 23 photos, fourteen have corresponding negatives. Some of the photos bear a few creases, but otherwise the collection is in very good condition.$500-700
