(JAPANESE SURRENDER OF THE PHILIPPINES): A superb archive of material related to the Japanese surrander of the Philippines, all likely obtained near or at New Bilibid Prison (near Manila), September, 1945. Included in this fine lot are: a one peso Philippines Treasury Certificate, 6 1/4" x 2 1/2" overprinted with "VICTORY" in black letters, signed in both english and Japaneses by Gen. TOMOYUKI YAMASHITA (1885 - 1946), the "Tiger of Malaysia" who led forces in the capture of Malaya and Singapore and did not surrender until September 2, 1945, later hanged for war crimes. The note also bears a black thumbprint placed on the note by Yamashita. Notes on the bill indicated that it was signed five days after Yamashita's surrender; a second similar certificate signed by members of Yamashita's staff, including: LT. GEN. AKIRA MUTO, REAR ADM. KADRU ARIMA, KAKU HARADA, OSAMU KAWASHIMA, C. KATAOKU, ISAMU HIRAI, MASUO YOSHIKI, D. OHKAWACHI, T. MANJOME and SHINPEI FUKUEI; a group of nine original 2" x 2 1/2" bust "mug shots" with name and prison number of Yamashita, Muto, Adm. Denhichi Okochi, Arima, Hirai, Fukuei, harada, Kawashima and Yoshiki; a 1" x 2" brass tag with rectangular holes and bearing Japanese characters, possibly Yamashita's dog tag (?); an original 3" x 4" b/w snapshot showing Yamashita and three staffers dejectedly pacing at the prison; and seven later images of Yamashita and his captors prior to and during his trial for war crimes. Sold with a copy of a letter of provenance of the American sergeant who had served as one of Yamashita's captors. A great archive, in very good condition. $1,000-1,500
