Circa 1850 Japanese Meiji Period Mixed-Metal Vase measuring 17 1/4" in height. The texture of this vase is just like the trunk of a tree and this is actually callled the tree bark pattern and design. This is a very Interesting and Unusual Piece. This is Japanese Lacquer on top of Satsuma. The cloisonne along with thew mixed metals have been applied to is probably pottery, earthenware or porcelain. Cloisonne of flowers, butterflies and birds are inlaid into the lacquering. It appears to be a hammered black rippled body embossed with a central tree bearing black and orange flowers maybe mums with a black and orange bird resembling a oriole nestled in between. Just a Beauty. Recently at Skinner's in Boston they had a similar mixed metal vase which was handsome with designs of autumn flowers in silver, gold and copper with borders of butterflies along the base and neck. That vase sold for $64,625.00 according to a article that was in The Antiques and the Arts issue of 5/29/2007. We have talked to several oriental experts and I have been told that this process is very rarely seen and a large piece like this example is Very Rare. The white spot on the upper left of the vase is a reflection of lighting used in the image taking process. Excellent Condition with No chips, cracks or Restoration. Additional images are available upon request.
