TEXTILE: Japanese Meiji period (1868-1912) polychrome hand-painted Boy's Day banner (nobori) of woven hemp (?) depicting the Kashiwa oak leaf crest and two samurai; the May 5 festival celebrated both martial strength and Shinto ritual cleansing from the 5th c. onward, and came to honor male children and continuance of patrimonial lineage after the 19th c. These banners are flown above a family home to announce the presence of a boy child in the household. 176'' L
