JAPANESE KUTANI PORCELAIN TUREEN & UNDERPLATE #859237
<table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="4"><tr><td><em> </em></td></tr><tr> <td width="100%"> Signed Kutani porcelain tureen, cover and stand or underplate, made in Japan, late 19th century or very early 20th century. <P><P> Measurements: Diameter of plate is 7 1/2". Diameter of tureen excluding handles is 5 1/2" and with handles, a little over 6 1/2". Height of tureen only is 7 1/2". <P><P> Exquisite Kutani tureen. Pedestal shaped bowl moulded with intertwined branch formed handles, echoed in twisted handle of lid. Raised, moulded flowers at either end of handles and at 4 points surrounding handle of lid. <P><P> The entire surface of all pieces is very richly painted in enamels with predominant use of iron-red (typical of kutani of the period). Each piece has a long-tailed bird (pheasant) surrounded by thickly-enamelled flowers, some in blue and violet. Circular cartouches contain landscape scenes and butterflies, also typical of katani. Spaces inbetween the enamelled patterns and design are filled in with iron-red linear patterns. Marked contrast between rich enamel and fine, delicate line decoration. <P> One of the most beautiful features of the piece is the decoration Underneath the underplate: it is encircled by a ring of pomegranates and butterflies. Obviously done by an extremely gifted artist, this is a wonderful work of art. <P><P> Signature: Both tureen and underplate are signed underneath. <P><P> Condition: Very good. </td></tr><tr> <td> </td></tr><tr> <td>Reference #: 539a</td></tr><tr><td>Condition:See Description</td></tr><tr><td>Year:See Description</td></tr><tr><td>Title:JAPANESE KUTANI PORCELAIN TUREEN & UNDERPLATE</td></tr><tr><td>Location:Boca Raton</td></tr></table>
