This is a rare antique large Japanese Kutani pottery figure known as Daikoku. This figurine is beautifully modeled, styled, and decorated in a polychrome Imari style color palette. The figurine is heavily enameled in royal blue, brown, green and red with extensive fine gilding.
Daikoku is standing on bags of rice; holding a magic mallet (with male and female symbols), which fulfils all wishes. He holds a large white bag of jewels on his shoulder. On his chest he has a golden sun disk. On the rug under Daikoku?s slippers, there are extensive oval decorative medallions with Japanese calligraphy and other symbols. Daikoku is elegantly clad in fine suit and hat. His face has a jolly expressive character. Daikoku is the Japanese god of wealth and protector of the soil and patron of farmers. He is one of the Shichi Fukujin, one of the seven gods of fortune. Called the Great Black One, he makes wishes of mortals come true. Daikoku is repesented as a jolly prosperous man, and he is a friend of children. He is the father of Ebisu.
