A BEAUTIFUL JAPANESE METALWORK ETCHED DRAGON PLATE
An intricately etched decorative metalwork dragon plate depicting a scene from Japanese folklore and mythology. A samurai warrior appears to be presented with a gift by an empress or deity, with an attendant in a dragon headdress nearby, along with a temple gate in the background through which a procession passes. There is a giant temple bell with an image of the Buddha being carried aloft by a group of men. The samurai is perhaps on his way to a major battle at sea, and is shown standing atop waves on the ocean. Two other attendants carry banners. The entire scene is framed by two dynamic dragons, one of which holds the pearl of wisdom at the top.
This piece is made of an undetermined composition of metals, which has subsequently been silvered. The Japanese metalworkers were arguably the greatest metalworkers in the history of humanity, and to this day some of their techniques remain a mystery. Diameter is 12", and there is no damage or repair to the metal, though slight, almost imperceptible imperfections do appear in the silver plating process. This piece was created circa 1920's. Additional photos are available upon request.
