<td width="100%">
Japanese carved boxwood brush washer bowl. Probably early 1900's.

Measures 4 3/4 inches accross and about 1 3/4inches high.

Very organic, assymetrical shape with branches and stems twisting and turning over and under one another. A locust creeps on one branch, while a squirrel climbs up the opposite side of the bowl.
Fascinating umbrella-shaped flora (mushrooms?) and disc-like plant matter underneath, which is perhaps even more intrigueing than the top. The carving is a riot of imagination with forms protruding and arching about each other, forming interesting open and negative spaces. Very fine detail. The eyes of both locust and squirrel appear to be black glass.

Very good condition.
