AN UNUSUAL BRONZE NETSUKE OF TWO CATS AT PLAY
An interesting bronze netsuke, or toggle of two cats at play. Netsukes were primarily used in Japan (and to some extent in China) from about the 18th through the 20th centuries as toggles to hold a small pouch under the obi (or 'belt') of a kimono, which was the traditional dress and had no pockets as we know them. These netsuke were made out of many materials, such as ivory and wood (which were the most commonly used materials), to more unusual materials such as bronze, antler, boar's tusk, etc.
This netsuke, though unsigned and somewhat difficult to age accurately, appears to be from the early 20th century, possibly from China. It has a charcoal patina and is rather heavy. It is in perfect condition and is quite charming in its composition of two cats playing with each other.
