JAPAN:LOT of 409 cast Japanese coins from the Edo period of the Tokugawa shogunate, Tempo Tsuho AE 100 mon coins, cast circa 1835-70 (150 coins), Kanei Tsuho AE mon (259 coins), unsearched group with likely some better varieties, average circulated quality, retail value $1750, lot of 409 coins. The Tempo Tsuho coin was cast in the Edo period with a face value of 100 mon, originally cast in the 6th year of the Tempo era (1835). The obverse of the coin reads "Tempo" a reference to the era this coin was designed in, and "Tsuho" which means "circulating treasure" or currency. This type circulated for 35 years, and stopped being produced during the Meiji Restoration after the introduction of the machine-struck Japanese coinage. In 1636, the Kanei Tsuho coin was introduced by the government of the Tokugawa shogunate as a means to standardize copper coins and keep up a sufficient supply of copper coinage, being the first government-minted copper coin in 700 years. These coins would become the daily currency of the common people and would be used for small payments. Due to the isolationist policies of the Tokugawa shogunate, the outflow of currency was halted and Kanei Tsuho coins would continue to be the main coin circulating in Japan. Kanei Tsuho were minted for 230 years despite the fact that the Kanei era ended in 1643.
