Popular folk rock and blues star of the ‘60s noted for her raspy, emotional singing style most closely identified with her posthumous hit “Me and Bobby McGee.” Her psychedelic roller-coaster lifestyle led to her early death of a heroin overdose in a Hollywood hotel. Offered is her personally owned and played Autoharp. According to the accompanying statement by her roommate, Linda Waldron, Joplin moved from Texas to a Baker Street basement apartment in San Francisco which she shared with her. In late 1965, Joplin returned to her home in Port Arthur, TX, leaving some items behind, including her Autoharp which Waldron kept. In very good condition, both manufacturer and key labels display an even patina with some expected wear from usage. A thin, narrowing crack extends 5" from the sound hole to the metal bridge for the strings. Contained in original hard shell carrying case, well worn with three ‘60s era stickers affixed. The case evidences some cracking and surface abrasion. Accompanied by letters of authenticity by Waldron and also from Joplin’s biographer Myra Friedman attesting to Waldron’s statement, “Janis had come from Texas with her autoharp in hand and other friends recall Janis and Linda strumming Janis’s autoharp and singing together...” Both letters have a picture of the Autoharp and of Janis playing it affixed. A wonderful associated artifact of the legendary ‘60s rock star.
