(24.1 x 19.1 cm) 1984 this print is number 6 from an edition of 15 ESTIMATE: $2,500-3,500 PROVENANCE Robert Miller Gallery, NEW YORK Private Collection, NEW YORK Jan Groover was a painter before she was a photographer, and as John Szarkowski wrote after her 1986 mid-career retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, "...her pictures were good to think about because they were first good to look at. I mean, first, that her pictures were in fact good to think about , and second, that the ideas in them were so deeply imbedded in the aesthetic sensation that they were and are perhaps inextricable from it" (Szarkowski, Jan Groover PHOTOGRAPHS, NEW YORK, 1993, p. 2). In the late 1970s, Groover embarked upon a body of work that has come to be known as the "Kitchen Series," capturing still lifes of kitchen utensils and fruits juxtaposed in an extremely forceful and painterly manner. It is perhaps from this point that Groover began platinum printing, enabling her to print a much wider and more precise range of tones than the more commonly used gelatin silver print allowed. Always conscious to exclude any sort of autobiographical reference or "confessional materials," these works also focus on the kitchen utensil and/or fruit still life motif.
