JAMES WILSON MORRICE R.C.A. (1865-1924)
AMES WILSON MORRICE R.C.A. (1865-1924) QUAI DES GRANDS AUGUSTINS, PARIS, Oil on canvas, signed lower left, signed verso, inscribed and dated indistinctly, Paris 1904, in sepia ink on an old paper label to the frame verso, further inscribed in another hand and titled to the stretcher 17" x 14" - 43.2 x 35.6 cm. Provenance: Waddington's Appraisal Clinic, The Robert McLaughlin Art Gallery, Oshawa; currently a Private Collection, Coutice, Ontario, previous provenance unrecorded. Note: Although, Morrice chose to depict many views of the Quai des Grand Augustins, this fine canvas and its previous history of ownership is unrecorded. This intriguing canvas is in untouched condition and has not been on the market for over half a century. This work dates circa 1904 or slightly before-1906 based on similarities in Morrice's painting technique to two works of c.1906: Nocturne Venice (Hill, Cat. no. 52, p.122); and Dieppe (Hill, Cat. no. 50) both Laing Collection, NGC; and the earlier canvas, Venice at the Golden Hour, c. 1901-2 (Montreal Museum of Fine Arts 949.1005).
